What is IO-Link Safety?
O-Link Safety is a network protocol that allows communication between field devices (the lowest sensor/actuator level) and higher level PLCs. This allows real time monitoring and feedback from devices.
What are the benefits of IO-Link Safety?
Simplified installation and maintenance, reduced cabling cost, increased data availability and accuracy, and reduced downtime through enhanced troubleshooting.
What is the pricing for IO-Link Safety?
Depending on the configuration, IO-Link Safety compatibility adds approximately 25-35% to the cost of tGard, but allows significant savings in terms of installation and maintenance.
What do I need to setup an IO-Link Safety system?
A safety controller (PLC), an IO-Link device, a master, cabling, and an IODD file (IO-Link Device Description file that is provided by the supplier of the device). IODD Finder: https://ioddfinder.io-link.com/
Are there any special requirements for wiring IO-Link Safety devices?
No special cables or connectors are required. Standardized 3-conductor cables can be used. Maximum cable length is 20m.
Is IO-Link Safety available on any of your other products?
Currently it is only available on our tGard product line.
Which network infrastructures will tGard with IO-Link Safety be compatible with?
Initially, IO-Link Safety masters are only compatible with Profinet/Profisafe. The timeframe on availability with other network infrastructures is not currently available.
What are the relevant standards for IO-Link Safety devices?
ISO 13849-1 and IEC 61508/62061.
What are some examples of the external data available from tGard with IO-Link Safety?
Some examples are the number of times an e-stop has been pressed, an escape release used or a solenoid activated. This data is transmitted on cyclic communication channels.
How many devices can be connected to a master?
Typically a master will have 8 ports for IO-Link Safety devices. However this can vary by supplier.
Does power come from the network or is a separate supply required?
Both power and data connections are integrated in the 5 pin connector on the tGard unit, and power typically comes from a Power Over Ethernet switch that provides power for the other components in the system.
